Statements by UNIFIL Spokesperson Neeraj Singh on the situation pertaining to the village of Ghajar

30 November 2010 - United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams and UNIFIL Force Commander Major-General Alberto Asarta Cuevas today met with Acting Director General Rafi Barak of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem.

Mr. Barak informed them about the decision of the Israeli Security Cabinet to accept in principle UNIFIL's proposal to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from northern Ghajar.

17 November 2010 - UNIFIL Force Commander Major-General Alberto Asarta Cuevas received a phone call from the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs informing him that the Israeli Security Cabinet has accepted in principle the UNIFIL proposal to facilitate the withdrawal of IDF from northern Ghajar.

We are awaiting formal notification in order to get more details. It is also important to have the date for the IDF withdrawal from the area.

This is a long standing matter and our position is very clear that Israel is obliged to withdraw from northern Ghajar and the adjacent area north of the Blue Line, in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 1701.
We have been actively engaged with both the parties on the basis of UNIFIL's proposal to facilitate the IDF withdrawal from the area.

In our effort to advance the process of withdrawal, UNIFIL had recently suggested some ideas and modalities for consideration by the parties.
