Peacekeepers support rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure

support rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure

Despite challenging conditions on the ground, UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to undertake tasks in support of vital civilian infrastructure such as repairs and rehabilitation of water networks and bridges in south Lebanon.

Peacekeepers across the mission’s area of operations, from east to west, have not only supported hospitals and local communities with drinking water deliveries, but they have also repaired damaged water networks and deepwell pumps.

A case in point is a recent undertaking by the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team of the UNIFIL’s Chinese contingent, in coordination with the mission’s engineering assets, who repaired a damaged water pump located deep inside a well.

A detailed joint survey led to the identification of a 280‑metre access route for a maintenance crane. The corridor posed multiple challenges: the first 200 metres were heavily damaged and blocked by earthen berms, while the remaining stretch required the removal of more than a dozen large carob trees. Through these efforts, peacekeepers demonstrated their role in ensuring safe access to the critical site.

By enhancing mobility and mitigating potential threats through EOD activities, peacekeepers ensured that essential repair equipment could reach the site safely before the actual repair could start.

By restoring access to essential civilian infrastructure like water systems and ensuring safe working conditions, UNIFIL continues to build the foundation for a return to lasting stability in its area of operations.
