UNIFIL today donated several vehicles and information technology equipment to Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces (ISF), which is the country’s primary national police agency for maintaining public safety and security, during a ceremony in the southern town of Tyre.
Aimed at UNIFIL’s continued efforts to strengthen operational capacity of State security institutions in south Lebanon, today’s support included 4x4 vehicles, computer sets, printers and smartphones.
UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara said strong and effective state institutions in south Lebanon matter more to the communities than ever.
“Your daily work with other national institutions contributes to security and public order and, more broadly, to the presence and authority of the Lebanese state in the south,” said Major General Abagnara. “When people see their national institutions present and ready to respond to their needs, they gain something essential, confidence in their institutions and in the future.”
On behalf of the ISF, the organization’s head of the Information Technology Division, Brigadier General Ali Sakineh, received the equipment. He expressed gratitude not only for this support but for “nearly five decades of commitment and partnership" with UNIFIL.
The UNIFIL head said the value of the UNIFIL donation lies in what it will enable to do on the ground for “greater stability and stronger state authority” in southern Lebanon.
Major General Abagnara added: “UNIFIL can support and facilitate, but lasting stability depends on strong and effective Lebanese state institutions. Stronger Lebanese state institutions in the south mean greater stability and a stronger future for Lebanon.”
