UNIFIL and Lebanese Army formalize UNIFIL support to Lebanese soldiers
UNIFIL today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its strategic partners, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), stipulating provisions for its logistical support to the LAF.
UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col signed the MoU with the LAF Commander, General Joseph Aoun, in the LAF Headquarters in Beirut.
The MoU follows a request by the Security Council, through its resolution 2591 on 30 August, to UNIFIL to take “temporary and special measures” to support and assist the LAF with non-lethal material such as fuel, food and medicine, and other logistical support.
The UNIFIL support is expected to ameliorate the compounded negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Lebanon’s unprecedented socio-economic and political crises on the LAF.
Within the framework of resolution 2591, and as the MoU was in the works, UNIFIL recently handed over first deliveries of fuel, food and medicine to the LAF.
