UNIFIL is striving to support the Lebanese Armed Forces, its strategic partner, through the unprecedented crises as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the socio-economic situation. Recently, the medical facility within the main Lebanese Armed Forces barracks in Tyre was refurbished with the support of UNIFIL’s Italian Battalion.
Due to the unprecedented crisis represented by the compounded effect of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the socio-economic crises experienced by Lebanon, UNIFIL extended a helping hand to the Lebanese Red Cross.
Tripartite meetings are very sensitive meetings, so discreet that no recordings are allowed to be made of them. They are the only forum where representatives of the two parties, Lebanon and Israel, who are technically at war, regularly meet face-to-face for indirect talks. Since the first United Nations naval peacekeeping force in history was deployed in 2006, UNIFIL’s Maritime Task Force has been providing all possible support to the Lebanese Navy not only in monitoring the Lebanese territorial waters but also in enhancing the navy’s own capabilities. <p class="x"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Just before 3 p.m. on April 6, UNIFIL radar detected multiple rocket launches from three locations in southern Lebanon toward Israel. Explosions were heard over the south, including the mission’s Naqoura headquarters, as Israel’s Iron Dome defence system intercepted many of the rockets. UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Aroldo Lázaro, was on the phone immediately to urge restraint and ensure the crisis didn’t escalate.</span></span></span></p>

<p>Recently an Explosive Ordnance Risk Education event was organized at Al Tahrir High School in Al Sultaniyah village, south Lebanon. The event, a joint effort of many stakeholders, aimed to raise awareness among students of the dangers of unexploded ordnances and explosive remnants of war, in order to reduce accidents and deaths.</p>

The Task Force has, since the very beginning, been providing substantial support to the Lebanese Navy, not only in monitoring territorial waters but also in building its capacity and capabilities.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

These joint activities include patrols and training exercises. A total of twenty-two female participants were trained on various negotiation and mediation skills and techniques on domestic issues.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p>On 11 December 2006, in a Tripartite meeting, a Liaison and Coordination Arrangement was agreed by UNIFIL, the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces. UNIFIL's Liaison mechanism plays a crucial role to prevent misunderstandings, de-escalate tensions between Lebanon and Israel and better implement United Nations Resolution 1701.</p>
