Press releases

  • 14 Feb 2025 - This evening a UNIFIL convoy taking peacekeepers to Beirut airport was violently attacked, and a vehicle was set on fire. UNIFIL’s outgoing Deputy Force Commander, who was returning home after ending his mission, was injured. We are shocked by this outrageous attack on peacekeepers who have been serving to restore security and stability to south Lebanon during a difficult time.
  • 10 Feb 2025 - UNIFIL congratulates Lebanon on the formation of a new Government. Peacekeepers will actively support the Salam Government in its efforts to fully implement resolution 1701, including through our strong partnership with the Lebanese Army and other security institutions.
  • 26 Jan 2025 - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is very concerned about reports of Lebanese civilians returning to villages where Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are still present and of casualties due to Israeli fire. At Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) request, UNIFIL peacekeepers are deploying to areas indicated by LAF across the mission’s area of operations to monitor the situation and help prevent any further escalation. However, the management of crowds remains outside our mandate.
  • 26 Jan 2025 - Much has changed in Lebanon since the Cessation of Hostilities Understanding came into force in the early hours of 27 November 2024.
  • 04 Jan 2025 - This morning peacekeepers observed an IDF bulldozer destroying a blue barrel marking the line of withdrawal between Lebanon and Israel in Labbouneh, as well as an observation tower belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces immediately beside a UNIFIL position there. The IDF’s deliberate and direct destruction of both clearly identifiable UNIFIL property and infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces is a flagrant violation of resolution 1701 and international law.
  • 26 Dec 2024 - Any actions that risk the fragile cessation of hostilities must cease. Israel and Lebanon have recommitted to full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701. To address outstanding issues, both parties are urged to utilize the newly-established Mechanism as agreed in the understanding.
  • 27 Nov 2024 - UNIFIL welcomes the announcement of a cessation of hostilities and the recommitment to Security Council resolution 1701 as a path toward peace. We will cooperate with all relevant partners to make the cessation of hostilities work. We will continue performing our mandated tasks, and we have already begun adjusting our operations to the new situation.
  • 25 Nov 2024 - UNIFIL is seriously concerned by numerous strikes on the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) inside the Lebanese territories, despite their declared non-involvement in the ongoing hostilities between Hizbullah and Israel.
  • 22 Nov 2024 - Earlier today, two 122-mm rockets struck the Sector West Headquarters in Shama, injuring four Italian peacekeepers who are now receiving treatment at the base hospital. Fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening.
  • 19 Nov 2024 - UNIFIL peacekeepers and facilities were targeted in three separate incidents in south Lebanon today, with four peacekeepers injured in one of the incidents.  Four Ghanaian peacekeepers on duty sustained injuries as a rocket – fired most likely by non-State actors within Lebanon – hit their base “UNP 5-42” in the east of the village of Ramyah. The peacekeepers sustained injuries and three of them have been transferred to a hospital in Tyre for treatment.
