UNIFIL marked United Nations Day today, reflecting on the enduring values of the United Nations and reaffirming its commitment to peace and stability in south Lebanon.
In a message for the occasion, Major General Diodato Abagnara, Head of Mission and Force Commander, emphasized the continued importance of the United Nations’ founding principles of peace, dialogue and cooperation.
“Here in south Lebanon, we know that peace cannot be taken for granted,” he said. “It requires trust, determination and the willingness to work together.”
Every day, military and civilian personnel of UNIFIL, representing countries from around the world, work to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, maintain stability, and assist efforts that help communities recover and return to normalcy.
The occasion also carried special significance as it will be the final United Nations Day observed by UNIFIL before the mission’s mandate concludes at the end of 2026. Paying tribute to peacekeepers serving under the UN flag, Major General Abagnara highlighted their dedication to supporting peace and security in south Lebanon.
As UNIFIL enters the final chapter of its presence in south Lebanon, the mission remains focused on supporting stability and preserving the foundations for a lasting peace.
Reaffirming the mission’s commitment, he stressed that UNIFIL will continue working alongside the Lebanese Armed Forces and local communities until its final day of operation.
Observed annually on 24 October, United Nations Day commemorates the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. This year’s observance comes at a significant moment, as communities across south Lebanon continue to recover from the impact of recent hostilities and work toward rebuilding their lives.
“On this United Nations Day, let us renew our commitment to peace, cooperation and the people we serve,” he continued. “Together, we serve. Together, we build peace. Together, we shape the future.”
