As part of ongoing support to local communities, which are the cornerstones of stability in South Lebanon, UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to support efforts to maintain essential services and improve the daily lives of residents. Through close coordination with local authorities, municipalities, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), and community representatives, UNIFIL has facilitated activities that help keep critical infrastructure used by both residents and peacekeepers operational and accessible.
Due to the security situation, activities in sensitive areas require coordination with armies on both sides of the Blue Line to ensure the safety of all involved. UNIFIL does this through its liaison channels, ensuring that necessary reconstruction and repair work can proceed safely.
On 1 July 2026, Indian peacekeepers escorted a team from Chebaa village to facilitate the supply of water from local springs to the village’s reservoirs. The activity was coordinated to ensure safety, and was carried out to support local efforts to maintain the water distribution system and ensure the continued availability of water for residents.
During the visit, the team conducted an on-site inspection of the reservoirs and repaired the system bringing water to the reservoir from the springs. This also provided an opportunity for local representatives and UNIFIL personnel to discuss ongoing requirements related to the village’s water infrastructure.
This was part of a wider series of UNIFIL support activities across the area of operations. In recent months, peacekeepers have facilitated the movement of civilian workers, technical teams, humanitarian convoys, and mobile medical clinics carrying out repairs and services related to water networks, electricity systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and healthcare delivery. These activities have included support for water pipeline inspections and repairs, restoration of water facilities, electrical maintenance works, and access for medical services in several communities across South Lebanon.
By helping local teams safely access key infrastructure and carry out essential maintenance, UNIFIL continues to support community resilience, strengthen cooperation with local stakeholders, and ensure public infrastructure that peacekeepers also use is available and functional. The Chebaa water supply mission highlights the practical assistance provided by peacekeepers in addressing everyday needs and ensuring that vital services continue to reach the communities that depend on them.
