UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to remain in positions across south Lebanon and along the Blue Line, maintaining a visible and active presence while monitoring and reporting developments on the ground in accordance with Security Council Resolution 1701.
The intensive violence and exchanges of fire since early March posed significant challenges, but the mission and its peacekeepers persevered in their tasks.
From monitoring the situation to coordinated movements on the ground, peacekeepers continue to carry out essential tasks under increasingly volatile conditions, adapting daily to evolving security challenges. The conflict has claimed the lives of seven peacekeepers and left several others injured, underscoring the risks inherent in maintaining a presence in such an environment.
The broader human toll of the conflict has been immense. Tens of thousands of civilians from UNIFIL area of operations have been displaced, with many of them killed or injured in the ensuing violence. There has been widespread destruction of civilian homes and critical infrastructure.
As the conflict gradually intensified, it also added additional layer of challenges for peacekeepers’ mobility.
Nonetheless, UNIFIL continues to sustain critical operations along the Blue Line, including monitoring activities, reporting violations, and maintaining liaison mechanisms between the parties. These efforts help reduce misunderstandings and prevent escalation in a highly fragile environment.
At the same time, peacekeepers facilitate humanitarian access by coordinating safe passage and providing security escorts for aid convoys moving through affected areas. Maintaining freedom of movement remains essential for these operations.
UNIFIL reminds all parties that any restrictions on peacekeepers’ freedom of movement or actions endangering their lives constitute violations of Security Council Resolution 1701. The mission continues to support Lebanon’s state institutions and local communities south of the Litani River, reinforcing stability where it is most needed.
Through their work, UNIFIL peacekeepers have demonstrated that even under highly difficult conditions, they are fully committed to their Security Council-mandated tasks.
Through continuous engagement and coordination, UNIFIL helps create space for stability and a political process to take root, while underscoring that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.
