In visit to UNIFIL headquarters, Lebanon’s parliamentary committee head reaffirms commitment to resolution 1701

In a demonstration of Lebanon’s continued commitment and support to Security Council Resolution 1701, which forms the core of UNIFIL’s mandate, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Lebanese Parliament, Fadi Alameh, today led a parliamentary delegation to UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura.

Welcoming the five-member delegation, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro discussed the situation in the south and the work that UNIFIL peacekeepers are doing.

He said that the ongoing daily exchanges of fire have caused significant damage to lives and property on both sides of the Blue Line and this must stop.

“Any miscalculation could lead to a sudden and wider escalation, with devastating consequences,” he said. “We are monitoring the situation closely, but we have also intensified contacts with authorities on both sides of the Blue Line to urge de-escalation.”

The Government of Lebanon recently asked for the renewal of UNIFIL’s mandate, which normally happens at the end of August, and consultations will soon begin

“Your visit is a further demonstration of the importance that the Lebanese institutions give to this matter,” the UNIFIL head told the delegation. “I welcome the committee’s steadfast support for Resolution 1701.”

While in UNIFIL Headquarters, Mr. Alameh reaffirmed Lebanon's “full and clear cooperation” in implementing Resolution 1701, which is “a step towards de-escalation.”

“I also extend my greetings to you (Lt. Gen. Lázaro) and the peacekeepers, wishing you success in your noble mission to achieve peace, while protecting Lebanon's sovereignty and border,” said Mr. Alameh. “UNIFIL has built strong relationships with local associations, municipalities, and residents. The people of the south, along with all Lebanese, are keen to maintain these positive connections.”
