UNIFIL-supported solar system to improve lives in Rumaysh

UNIFIL’s Sector West peacekeepers last week handed over a solar panel system to the Rumaysh Municipality in the south-western Lebanon.

With the 360-watt solar system producing 37.5 KW power, local residents will have an improved water distribution mechanism in the Municipality. This will benefit up to 14,000 people during summertime.

Besides improving the quality and accessibility of drinking water for the local population, the new system will also help improve irrigation directly benefiting farmers in Rumaysh as well as in the neighbouring villages of Bint Jbeil and Al Haj.

UNIFIL peacekeepers from Italy and Ghana worked in completing the project, following a request from the Municipality. It was inaugurated on 5 December 2019.

Between their core peacekeeping duties, UNIFIL peacekeepers regularly carry out various activities in support of the host communities, which – together with their operational activities – have helped keep calm in the Mission’s area of operation for over 13 years.
