Peacekeepers continue clearing roadblocks, helping local civilians

UNIFIL peacekeepers continue clearing roadblocks of debris and rubble from the recent conflict within the mission’s area of operations in south Lebanon. In coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), peacekeepers recently cleared several roadways, allowing civilians, Lebanese soldiers, and peacekeepers to move around more easily.

Among the roads cleared were some in Kfar Kila, Kleyaa, El Khiam and near Kawkaba. UNIFIL peacekeepers have conducted about 280 such operations in south Lebanon since the cessation of hostilities understanding of last November.

The Commander of UNIFIL peacekeepers in its eastern sector, Brigadier General Ricardo Esteban Cabrejos, said, “The ultimate goal of rehabilitating damaged roads is to facilitate the return of displaced populations and to enable access for humanitarian actors in the affected areas.”

Earlier this month, UNIFIL’s Italian contingent repairedsection of a vital road close to the UN mission’s headquarters in Naqoura that was heavily damaged during conflict.

UNIFIL units carry out such operations in coordination with the LAF and local authorities.
