UNIFIL Runs in the Rain Marking World AIDS Day
Despite the wet weather, over 200 runners from a wide range of UNIFIL’s civilian and peacekeeping contingents participated in the run in Naqoura on 1 December 2016.
The event was held by UNIFIL’s HIV/AIDS and Gender Units to mark World AIDS Day and the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women.
Major-General Michael Beary, UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, commented on the importance of the day, “We're here this morning in Naqoura, with a lot of events being held all over the world on HIV AIDS. It remains a really serious problem. And we need to show our support for the 78 million people living with HIV.”
Before handing out the medals to the winners, Imran Riza, UNIFIL Deputy Head of Mission, acknowledged the work of the event coordinators, “I would also like to thank the collaboration we have now between the gender unit and the HIV AIDS unit, it's very good that you are doing this together, you are working together.”
