Lebanese Armed Forces celebrates 72nd Army Day

The Lebanese Armed Forces, UNIFIL’s strategic partner in south Lebanon, celebrated the 72nd Army Day in Beirut with a military parade and a graduation ceremony for 226 new Lebanese officer cadets. The event, held on 1 August, is significant as it is the first time it has been held in 2 years due to the presidential vacuum.

Brigadier-General Elias Yassin, head of Studies and Operations Department in the Military Academy provided context to the day, “This is considered one of the greatest days for us in the military institution. There are three points to consider: Firstly, it is the first step for every officer in the military institution. Secondly, it is an honour that every officer would hold to join the army. Thirdly, it is an occasion to hold the sword to distinguish between right and wrong, which represents the main foundation of the military institution and the Lebanese state.”

Addressing the new cadets, the President of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, said, “I am looking forward to see you the protectors of the country’s sovereignty and independence, and the watchful eye for the country’s security and the people’s freedom and tranquility.”

UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Michael Beary, was an invited guest at the event. He noted, “It is a great privilege to be here today. It is a very special day for so many different agencies in Lebanon and it is really a good day for me to be able to congratulate General Aoun, particularly on the importance of this day with the graduation of so many new cadets.”
