Austrian President visits UNIFIL

The President of the Republic of Austria, Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen, today visited the UNIFIL headquarters and received a briefing from the UN Peacekeeping Mission on its work to help further peace in south Lebanon.

During his meeting with Dr. Van der Bellen, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, briefed the President on the situation in UNIFIL’s area of operation in south Lebanon.  He also thanked the President for his country’s contribution of UN peacekeepers to help fulfill the Mission’s mandate of sustaining stability and peace.

While at the UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura, Dr. Van der Bellen, accompanied by Austria’s First Lady, Doris Schmidauer, as part of a delegation, met with Austrian troops serving with the Mission.

The First Lady also met with the Mission’s women peacekeepers from some of the current 42 troop contributing countries.

UNIFIL currently has more than 200 Austrian peacekeepers. The first Austrian troops joined UNIFIL in 2011.
