US delegation visits UNIFIL flagship

The Commander of UNIFIL’s Maritime Task Force (MTF), Rear Admiral Eduardo Augusto Wieland, hosted onboard the UNIFIL flagship a United States delegation including Ambassador Elizabeth Richard and the vice admiral of the United States Navy, James Malloy, off the coast of Beirut, last week.

During the 29 April visit to the UNIFIL flagship “UNIAO,” the UNIFIL MTF Commander briefed the delegation on the work of the UN Peacekeeping’s first and only major naval operation at sea. Rear Admiral Wieland also briefed the delegation on a series of trainings and exercises conducted with the Lebanese Navy.

Established in October 2006 at the request of the Government of Lebanon, UNIFIL MTF supports the LAF Navy in preventing the unauthorized entry of arms or related materiel by sea into Lebanon. Its mission also focuses on assisting Lebanon raise its own naval forces to control and protect Lebanon's seaways and territorial waters.

UNIFIL MTF currently has about 780 personnel and six ships: one each from Bangladesh, Brazil (flagship), Germany, Greece, Indonesia and Turkey.
