UNIFIL head meets with Lebanon’s Foreign Minister
UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col met with Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Gebran Bassil, in Beirut today, with discussions focusing on a wide range of issues concerning UNIFIL’s work in south Lebanon and at sea in pursuance of UN Security Council resolution 1701.
Major General Del Col briefed Minister Bassil on the situation in the UNIFIL area of operations and on his recent visit to New York and Washington D.C.
The UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander underlined the need for a renewed impetus to negotiations for the demarcation of the Blue Line, through the UNIFIL-led Tripartite mechanism. He also stressed the need for continued support to the Lebanese Armed Forces to help strengthen their capabilities to ensure security for South of Lebanon.
Major General Del Col noted the progress made in the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate together with Government institutions. He underlined the importance of ensuring that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 is fully respected and violations thereof are duly investigated and acted upon in the best interests of security and stability along the Blue Line.
