UNIFIL’s Chinese peacekeepers brighten up public school in south Lebanon

Seven classes that were once gloomy and dark are now full of bright pinks, greens, and oranges. At Al Majadil Public school, a team of Chinese peacekeepers worked for 12 days on rehabilitating the kindergarten floor.

As part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)’s ongoing support to Lebanese governmental institutions in its area of operations across south Lebanon, UNIFIL’s Civil Affairs Office funded this project.

The works were carried out by the Chinese engineering unit at UNIFIL, and it included wall painting, floor polishing, and electrical repairs of the classes and hallways at the kindergarten section. UNIFIL also facilitated a donation of educational materials to the school. The project was implemented in coordination with the Lebanese Ministry of Education.

The school combined the inauguration of the project with an art exhibition and a graduation. During the inauguration of the project, the school principle, Malik Hamadah, commended the work of the Chinese peacekeepers. “In a very short time their great efforts resulted in a perfect and wonderful outcome,” said Mr. Hamadah, highlighting the importance of projects that support the community, especially educational facilities.

For 12 days, a group of UNIFIL peacekeepers from the Chinese engineering unit came to Al Majadil Public School to execute the project with their own hands. They interacted with the staff and the students. They worked, rested, ate, and drank tea together.

According to Civil Affairs Officer Nasser Sabbah, there were a few linguistic difficulties but the Chinese peacekeepers, the staff and the students were still able to communicate. “They proved the language of peace and goodwill is stronger and more effective,” said Mr. Sabbah.
