Statement by UNIFIL Spokesperson Neeraj Singh on the rescue of elderly Lebanese woman

15 November 2010 - UNIFIL helped mediate the rescue of an elderly Lebanese woman who was caught in barbed wire in a minefield along the Blue Line near Al-Boustan in southern Lebanon.

On the evening of Saturday 13 November, UNIFIL received information that a woman was spotted near the Israeli Technical Fence entangled in barbed wire in a minefield. UNIFIL and Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) patrols were dispatched to the area.

The minefield rendered too dangerous any rescue efforts from the Lebanese side. UNIFIL therefore coordinated with the parties to facilitate the rescue of the woman from the Israeli side of the Technical Fence. The Israeli army handed over the woman to a UNIFIL medical team and shortly after midnight she rejoined family members under LAF and Red Cross supervision.

UNIFIL's effective liaison and swift coordination with the parties were instrumental in bringing the matter to a successful and speedy conclusion.
