Protecting harvests, supporting livelihoods in south Lebanon

Last month, Ghanaian peacekeepers, together with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), supported farmers in the villages of Rumaysh, Ayta Ash Shab, and Ramya during the harvest.

Farming is the lifeline of these communities. Families rely heavily on agriculture not only for income but also for food security and seasonal jobs. Yet many of their fields lie close to the Blue Line, where working the land comes with serious challenges. Farmers face the danger of unexploded ordnance left from past conflicts, cross-border tensions, and restricted access to some agricultural lands. Without coordination and security support, some lands are difficult or unsafe to reach.

To help, Ghanaian peacekeepers and the LAF worked side by side to provide security and secure access routes. Their presence reassured the community and enabled around 60 farmers to complete their tobacco harvest safely.

This support meant more than protection for the farmers. It safeguarded their livelihoods and strengthened trust between the community, UNIFIL, and the LAF.

This activity is one of many joint efforts carried out during key farming seasons, especially planting and harvest, reflecting UNIFIL’s ongoing commitment – together with the LAF – to support local communities, stability, and resilience in south Lebanon.
