No confirmation of 05 June protests; UNIFIL urges restraint on Blue Line

(03 June 2011, comments by UNIFIL Spokesperson Neeraj Singh on possible 05 June protests)

"At this time we have no official confirmation about such a demonstration in our area of operations. Moreover, any questions on security of public demonstrations should be addressed to Lebanese Armed Forces as they have primacy on security and law and order matters.

We are in constant contact with LAF on this matter. They keep us informed and we welcome the steps taken by LAF to ensure peace and security in the area.

Although we always stand ready to assist LAF, if they so request, within the scope of our mandate under resolution 1701, UNIFIL's operations are geared towards tasks mandated to us in relation to the cessation of hostilities.

In that context we always urge the parties to be very cautious in any activities along the Blue Line because of its sensitivity and we ask that they exercise utmost restraint in responding to any developments along the Blue Line and that they should use UNIFIL's good offices to address any potentially escalatory situation."
