Nepali Peacekeepers reopen vital road in Shaqra
UNIFIL’s Nepali peacekeepers have repaired a major road in Shaqra, restoring access for the local community and UNIFIL operations. The work was completed on December 16, 2024.
The road had been blocked since late October by a huge hole - 14 meters long, 3.5 meters deep, and 15 meters wide - making it impassable for vehicles. This road is a key route for both Shaqra residents and UNIFIL’s logistical operations.
After repeated requests from Shaqra’s municipality, the Nepali Battalion (NEPBATT), working with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), cleared the debris and repaired the road in just seven hours.
“This road is essential for the people of Shaqra,” said Mayor Ismail Ali Alzain. “We are grateful to NEPBATT for their hard work and support.”
The repairs widened the road to 6.5 meters, allowing all types of vehicles to pass, including UNIFIL’s logistical convoys.
Lt. Ujjwal Adhikari, NEPBATT’s engineering officer, emphasized: “This ensures smooth passage for our peacekeepers’ logistical movement.”
This effort goes beyond just fixing a road, it’s about building trust by addressing a critical need for both local residents and peacekeepers. Major Dinesh Bhandari, NEPBATT’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) officer, added: “This activity by Nepali peacekeepers supports the local community during these tough times.”
The hole, caused by recent conflict, had completely halted traffic, cutting off a vital connection between Shaqra and surrounding areas. The repairs have now reopened this lifeline route, allowing both people and peacekeepers to move safely and ensuring support can reach where it’s needed most.
