Major Valet remembered

French peacekeeper Major Jean-Louis Valet, who was killed in action in the vicinity of the Shab’a Farms in 2005, was remembered at solemn ceremony in the UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura last week.

As an unarmed UN peacekeeper, Major Valet was serving with Observer Group Lebanon of the UN Truce Supervision Organization, which works closely with UNIFIL along the Blue Line.

He was killed during a firefight between Israeli soldiers and Hizbollah on 9 January 2005. A cenotaph has been set up in the site in his memory.

Since its establishment in 1948, UNTSO has lost 51 soldiers – 8 of them from France.
