Italian peacekeepers train with Lebanese security forces on mountain warfare

UNIFIL’s Italian peacekeepers recently organized two separate trainings for members of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the Internal Security Forces (ISF) on mountaineering and mountain warfare.

During the trainings conducted from 10 to 14 September and from 1 to 5 October, Italian mountaineering military instructors from the 7th Alpine Regiment, led by Lt. Col. Antonio Scarano, taught and explained the basic techniques of climbing and movement along via ferrata especially designed by the Regiment from the Italian city of Belluno.

Other interesting features of the trainings, conducted in one of the main bases of UNIFIL’s Italian peacekeepers in Al Mansuri, included basic knot-making, overcoming obstacles techniques, abseiling and climbing techniques.

Altogether, 14 LAF and 23 ISF personnel participated in the training exercise with the Italian peacekeepers.

While extending UNIFIL’s mandate for another year, the UN Security Council on 30 August urged further international support for the LAF and all state security institutions, including through trainings and joint exercise.
