153 schoolchildren visit UNIFIL HQ

UNIFIL peacekeepers today hosted in its headquarters in Naqoura more than 150 children from a local school as a way of strengthening the Mission’s relation with the communities.

The Mission’s Civil Affairs Office and Military Community Outreach Unit (MCOU) jointly organized the visit of 153 students, aged between six and seven years, and 17 teachers from Lebanese Evangelical School – Tyre.

Upon their arrival, an MCOU team (from Indonesia and Italy) briefed the visitors on the general work of UNIFIL peacekeepers through the display of Mr. and Mrs. Blue Barrel.

This was followed by a demonstration by UNIFIL’s Austrian Fire Brigade team, who offered practical knowledge on surviving a fire.

The young students also had a chance to visit ITALAIR and in with Italian helicopter pilots.

The visit was especially interesting for the children to link the topic of peace they study in the school with what the peacekeepers actually do on the ground.

Between peacekeeping duties, UNIFIL peacekeepers regularly carry out various small-scale activities with the host communities, like today’s visit, in order to maintain and enhance their excellent relation.
