UNIFIL Head of Mission holds separate meetings with top Lebanese leaders

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, had separate meetings today in Beirut with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, the Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri.

Discussions focused on the implementation of UNIFIL's mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) and related resolutions of 2373 (2017) and 2433 (2018), violations as well as the situation in UNIFIL’s Area of Operations in South Lebanon from the Litani River to the Blue Line, with special focus on continued strong cooperation between UNIFIL, the Lebanese Army and the host communities.

During the meetings, Major General Del Col emphasized the need for UNIFIL to have unimpeded access to the Blue Line.

“The meetings were very constructive in discussing how we can further our coordination in implementing the Security Council Resolutions and strengthen the capacity and presence of the Lebanese Armed Forces, including their navy,” said Major General Del Col after the visits.

“The continued strong support that UNIFIL receives from the Lebanese authorities, especially the Lebanese Armed Forces as our strategic partner, as well as the local population, are essential for the success of the Mission,” he added.

He also noted the importance for the continued use of UNIFIL’s tripartite and liaison mechanisms to avoid or de-escalate possible tension, and address issues of concern, especially along the Blue Line.
