UNIFIL steps up training activities with LAF

UNIFIL effort to build the capacity of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) has gathered momentum with more training activities conducted over the past week.

On Saturday, several LAF officers and soldiers trained alongside UNIFIL peacekeepers in Kawkaba (Sector East) and Naqoura (Sector West) for training on patrol leaders’ coordination.

Such training activities help consolidate LAF redeployment in south Lebanon, enhancing coordination and interoperability with UNIFIL in furthering peace and stability in the area.

Separately, 18 LAF officers participated in a two-day training with peacekeepers in Naqoura last week. The sessions focused on promoting gender equality and inclusivity in operational activities.

Highlighting the importance of this course, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara said its value is “tangible” and of utmost importance in strengthening the capacity of the LAF to enhance their deployment in southern Lebanon.

Last Thursday, following his visit to a LAF training hub in Aramein, northern Lebanon, Major General Abagnara said UNIFIL is working to support the Lebanese Army in their full deployment to the south of Lebanon, strengthening cooperation, and providing stability and security in line with Security Council Resolution 1701.

In its most recent resolution on the implementation of Resolution 1701, the Security Council requested the continued adaptation of UNIFIL’s activities to support the LAF and called for strengthened coordination between the two forces

In August alone, UNIFIL peacekeepers conducted 11 training activities with participation of 127 LAF personnel.
