Press Statement
UNIFIL peacekeepers and facilities were targeted in three separate incidents in south Lebanon today, with four peacekeepers injured in one of the incidents.
Yesterday afternoon, a UNIFIL patrol involving French and Finnish peacekeepers – while conducting a patrol in the village of Bedias – faced a denial of freedom of movement from a group of individuals with at least one of them armed.
Shama (Lebanon), 15 November 2024 – This afternoon, a 155mm live artillery shell hit UNP 2-3, UNIFIL West Sector headquarters in Shama.
The shell did not detonate and Italian bomb disposal experts swiftly secured the area, removed the ordnance, and conducted a controlled detonation.
This morning, a UNIFIL convoy headed to UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura was involved in a road accident along the coastal road, near the village of Shama.
This morning, a UNIFIL patrol near Qallawiyah noticed a cache of ammunition near the roadway. After informing the Lebanese Armed Forces of the discovery, peacekeepers continued on their planned route. A short while later, they got out of their vehicle to remove some debris from the roadway.
Yesterday, two IDF excavators and one IDF bulldozer destroyed part of a fence and a concrete structure in a UNIFIL position in Ras Naqoura. In response to our urgent protest, the IDF denied any activity was taking place inside the UNIFIL position.
This afternoon, a UNIFIL convoy bringing newly-arrived peacekeepers to south Lebanon was passing Saida when a drone strike occurred nearby.
This afternoon a rocket hit UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, setting a vehicle workshop on fire. Peacekeepers were not in bunkers at the time. While some peacekeepers suffered minor injuries, fortunately no one was seriously injured.
Peacekeepers continue to monitor and report to the Security Council on the situation in south Lebanon, despite the dramatic escalation and violence on the ground in recent weeks.
On 22 October, peacekeepers on duty at a permanent observation post near Dhayra were observing IDF soldiers conducting house clearing operations nearby. Upon realizing they were being observed, the IDF soldiers fired at the post. The duty guards withdrew to avoid being shot.
