World Cup kicks off onboard UNIFIL MTF

Party is on tonight’s programme on board of “Liberal”, UNIFIL’s Maritime Task Force flagship.

Under Brazilian command, the frigate is ready for the World cup’s kick off. In the welfare rooms crew members stayed on board to enjoy the opening game.

Since 2006 the United Nations created its first ever Maritime Task Force here in Lebanon. But today is all about football… Brazil is playing Croatia…

More than 10,000 km away from home, radio operator Sergeant Ginta feels emotional when thinking about his wife and two children: “It is different this time. They are all there in Brazil and we are here in Lebanon. But this is our job, and it’s ok.”

Even though Lieutenant Hudson Santos is the officer in charge for tonight, the pilot of the Brazilian air force is celebrating like everyone. “Football is very important for us in Brazil. But we are here doing a very important work for the United Nations.”

The final score is 3 – 1. A good start for Brazil and a successful relaxing night for the MTF!

In two days, back to the sea, for another sea patrol…
