Hebbariyeh stands on the western slope of Mount Hermon, in Hasbaya district, as high as 750 metres above the sea level. During the last winter period, the village experienced its share of the "white blizzard"; but as poetic as that may sound, Hebbariyeh, inhabited by over five thousand people, was shivering from cold.

Due to extensive power cuts and a limited-capacity power generator, the residents suffered severe power shortage which particularly affected them during cold nights.

Upon the request of the local authorities, UNIFIL Civil Affairs and the Indian Battalion supported the locality with a 350KVA power generator.

On the 5th February 2015, UNIFIL and Hebbariyeh municipality officiated the handover of the power generator during a ceremony attended by the Indian Battalion Commander Colonel Rajesh Dahiya and a host of peacekeepers as well as officers from UNIFIL's Civil Affairs.

"We had received a request from the Lebanese Army which was confirmed by the mayor," Civil Affairs officer Wael Chami explained. "It was especially urgent during the cold weather; their main request was to receive a generator that would meet the needs of the entire town." he emphasised.

Ewa Turyk, Civil Affairs officer said: "The power supply was the outstanding need for the village. The power generator received some months back was not sufficient."

Hebbariyeh mayor, Ali Barakat, voiced his and the village's appreciation for UNIFIL which "contributed in donating the generator that has solved the problem, by providing power to the residents."

Khaled Noureddine, the Mokhtar of the village, explained how "important the project is for the residents who used to pay additional charges. The cost the residents are bearing now has been greatly reduced, thanks to UNIFIL."
