On 9 June, UNIFIL organized a sports event at its headquarters in Naqoura. The event was organized to express support and contribute to the recovery of Nepal from the recent devastating earthquake that hit the country on 24 April 2015. More than 8,800 people were killed and over 23,000 injured. A number of UNIFIL Nepalese troops suffered personal losses.

During the event, UNIFIL civilian and military participants were joined by representatives of the Lebanese Army in different sport activities including an 8-kilometer run where over 500 participated.

Addressing the participants at the start of the run, UNIFIL Deputy Head of Mission, Imran Riza said: "Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and neighboring countries today in the aftermath of the earthquake. And before we start this race, we will take a moment to think about the Nepalese people and the suffering they have endured."

Mr. Riza added, "The run is a fitting way to show our solidarity with the Nepalese contingent, who has always had large participation in UNIFL running events."

Nepal is a long standing history with UNIFIL. It was one of the first nations to contribute to UNIFIL in 1978. With 870 troops in UNIFIL today, Nepal is one of the biggest troop contributing countries to UNIFIL.

Lt.Col. Johann Schenk from the German contingent said, "I organized this run with international friends from UNIFIL, I am happy that the event was successful."
