UN Open Day highlights local women’s role in peace-building

UNIFIL commemorated the annual Open Day on Women, Peace and Security on Monday December 1 with a presentation by the Women's Working Group of Southern Lebanon on ways to encourage women's involvement in the peace-building process. The event centers on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security which addresses gender issues and women's equal participation in rebuilding post-conflict societies.

The theme this year was In Their Own Voice: Women of Southern Lebanon Perspectives on Peace and Security. The Women's Working Group, represented by members from Tyre, Marjayoun and Bint Jbeil, emphasized the importance of women's participation in politics and security, especially at the decision-making levels, for a more democratic and inclusive society.

The Open Day was held at the Bassel Assad Cultural Movement Centre in Tyre and graced by the UN Special Coordinator Mr Derek Plumbly and UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Maj.-Gen. Luciano Portolano, members of the local community as well as UN military and civilian personnel.
